Nomadic Reign
ASPEN
This remarkable floor-length coat is crafted from an authentic American carriage or buggy blanket, dating back to the late 1800s—part of a rare lineage of textiles produced in the United States between 1890 and 1920. Woven from mohair wool, with possible traces of horsehair, the blanket has been thoughtfully transformed into a luxurious, one-of-a-kind couture garment by Nomadic Reign, known for hand-signed heirlooms, each with a unique serial number.
The back of the coat captures a scene reminiscent of a rustic mountain ranch, perhaps nestled in Aspen. Three majestic horses—noble companions—are stenciled onto the woven fabric in rich tones of sage, kelly green, chocolate, caramel, black, and apricot. The subtle background is striped in a muted weave, lending texture and depth. Framed in a deep wine-hued circular motif, the trio of horses presents with powerful, expressive faces—marked with grit, grace, and the enduring spirit of frontier life.
Each horse retains its original eye—small, rare details historically woven into some 19th-century animal motif blankets, preserved here as part of the coat’s authenticity and charm.
The sleeves are cut from the blanket’s original black wool, while the back of the collar continues the blanket’s woven design. Adding warmth and softness, biscuit-colored Mongolian lambswool trims the cuffs, the skirt hem, and the upper collar, creating a beautiful contrast to the structure of the textile body.
On the front panels, beneath the collar, you’ll find a striking detail: hand-appliquéd deer antlers, one on each side, elegantly positioned as if guarding the heart of the coat. These flank the coat’s antique metal clasp, an enamel-accented closure that adds a refined, vintage touch. The pattern work across the front is symmetrical, in rich forest tones—evoking fallen leaves, soft earth, and cool mountain air.
Inside, the coat is lined in sumptuous silk, in tones of buttery cream, sage, and gold. The trim features a luxurious triple-loop rope tassel in soft taupes and creams. A section of wine-colored velvet graces the lower lining, offering both contrast and continuity with the deep wine of the horses’ circular frame.
This couture piece is not only expertly tailored, with intricate hand stitching throughout, but it also tells a story—of the American West, of loyalty and wilderness, and of the artistry found in everyday utility made timeless. It is signed by the artist and bears a distinct serial number, ensuring its singular place in the world.
A wearable legacy, this coat is a tribute to heritage, craft, and the soulful connection between humans and horses.
