Nomadic Reign
DESERT MOONDROPS
This bespoke coat is a masterpiece, crafted from a rare 19th-century Chase carriage lap robe, also known as a buggy blanket. Produced by the Chase Company in the late 1800s, the blanket is made of wool, mohair, and possibly horsehair, combining durability with an exquisite design. The front panels showcase a mesmerizing pattern of moon-like drops, reminiscent of a desert landscape with sun and rain motifs. The imagery hints at the vastness of a parched desert, where the delicate balance between sun and rain shapes the land, creating a timeless visual narrative.
Silk-lined pockets are discreetly placed on each side at arm’s length, adding both convenience and elegance. The sleeves are formed from the solid black backing of the original blanket, while the collar and cuffs are made from soft, deep purple Tibetan lamb's wool, adding a bold and luxurious touch.
The front is further enhanced with intricate cotton tassels and a woven rope band in shades of grey and purple, which adds dimension and texture. The lower hem is bordered with a stunning multi-colored band of deep purples, mauves, and greens, with long, elegant tassels flowing from the trim. These details give the coat a sophisticated yet whimsical feel, as the tassels flow effortlessly, creating movement and grace.
The inner lining is made of plush crushed velvet, while the lower trim features shredded silks looped onto a paper mirror band, in complementary shades of purples, greens, and lilac. Beneath this, the second layer of lining is crafted from a vintage beige bisque velvet, soft and delicate, harmonizing beautifully with the bold outer design.
Fastened by an antique European buckle clasp, the coat’s closure is adorned with inlaid Czech glass, showcasing a central stone that adds an element of timeless craftsmanship. The clasp, sewn onto leather, provides a perfect finishing touch to this luxurious coat, marrying functionality with artistry. Every detail reflects a balance of vintage elegance and modern couture, creating a truly one-of-a-kind piece steeped in history and artistry.
