THREE MARES OF MAYFAIR
Three Mares of Mayfair, a full-length heirloom coat, is a rare fusion of equestrian symbolism, historic textile craftsmanship, and couture-level artistry. Created from an antique American carriage blanket—believed to date from the late 1800s—this one-of-a-kind piece showcases the elegance, strength, and enduring spirit of the horse, interpreted through masterful design and deep reverence for heritage.
Woven from mohair, wool, and likely a trace of horsehair, the original buggy blanket forms the heart of the coat, both structurally and symbolically. The focal point is found on the back panel: a breathtaking image of a dappled mare in soft bisque, taupe, and caramel hues. Surrounding her is a magnificent horseshoe-shaped wreath of hibiscus flowers and lush green foliage—an intentional and powerful motif. In the Victorian era, during which this blanket was likely woven, the hibiscus flower symbolized femininity, resilience, beauty, and strength—qualities this proud mare seems to embody fully.
A delicate red rein traces around her nose and ears, adding contrast and further emphasizing the gentleness in her expression. Above the wreath, the background transitions into a deep green tapestry-like field with the silhouette of what appears to be a stark winter forest—black trees standing against a quiet, contemplative sky. The visual layering evokes a moment of stillness in nature, a kind of tribute to the mare’s grace and strength.
The coat's sleeves are fashioned from the blanket’s original solid black wool, maintaining historical integrity. On the front panels of the coat, two additional mares emerge—each with large, expressive faces that invite connection. These front images are framed by an intricate dark green branch and foliage motif, which winds its way around both panels, echoing the richness of the scene on the back.
Trimming the coat is luxurious Mongolian lambswool in shades of cocoa, copper, and cream. It lines the oversized collar, which can be flipped up for warmth or flair, the cuffs, and the hem of the coat’s sweeping floor-length skirt. Beneath the Mongolian wool trim, the blanket’s original design continues, maintaining artistic continuity throughout.
The coat closes with a hidden hook-and-eye closure that preserves the visual flow of the front design. Inside, the lining is as exquisite as the exterior: a silk burnout velvet in a Greek key motif wraps the interior, with wine-colored velvet adding richness across the back lining. The hem is adorned with a silk tassel trim in soft creams and pale pinks—delicate, vintage, and unexpected.
Function meets form with discreet side pockets lined in silk, making the piece as practical as it is beautiful. Like all pieces from Nomadic Reign, this coat is hand-signed by the artist and marked with a unique serial number—ensuring authenticity, provenance, and its status as a true one-of-a-kind heirloom.
A wearable symbol of strength, beauty, and legacy, this coat honors the noble spirit of the horse and the enduring craftsmanship of American history—stitched into every inch of its luxurious form.
