This extraordinary, one-of-a-kind luxury coat is masterfully crafted from an original American carriage—or buggy—blanket, dating between 1890 and 1920. These rare blankets were woven to withstand the elements, often made from a unique blend of wool, mohair, and horsehair. Each was distinct, and only a limited number bore intricate animal motifs, making this piece particularly exceptional.
The focal point of this wearable art is a powerful Morgan or workhorse, richly rendered in tones of apricot, deep chocolate brown, and golden amber, with a bold red halter and harness. The horse, known for its strength and muscular grace, is a symbol of resilience and nobility—qualities beautifully captured in this historical textile.
The original imagery has been elevated through exquisite hand-beading by designer Hannah Borg of St. Helena Jewelry. Gemstones such as sapphire, jasper, onyx, goldstone, agate, fossilized ammonite, quartz, and vintage copper beads have been meticulously sewn along the lines and dappling of the horse. This detailing adds depth, movement, and a subtle shimmer that brings the motif to life.
The body of the coat is adorned in warm, glowing hues—golds, buttery yellows, and soft greens—carried throughout the garment with masterful continuity. The sleeves, cut from the original blanket’s solid black wool section, are finished with vintage black velvet cuffs. The skirt of the coat flows into a floor-length (chanter-style) silhouette, framed by a vintage passementerie trim featuring silk roping and tassels in apricot, cinnamon, and green tones.
A standout feature is the collar: a striking antique red fox fur tops the coat, with the underside made from a continuous section of the original blanket. The collar may be flipped up for added warmth and flair.
Details across the front panels echo the coat’s golden and green palette. Handcrafted pockets are set into both sides, and a hidden hook has been placed inside to accommodate a pocket watch—an elegant nod to the garment’s heritage. Apricot, persimmon, and green antique tassel trim runs down both front panels, tying the entire aesthetic together with quiet opulence.
Inside, the coat is lined with apricot velvet side panels and a full inner layer of embroidered copper silk. The hem is trimmed in a braided silk cable accented with tassels in eggplant and persimmon. As a final flourish, an antique Art Nouveau celadon glass segment is placed on the lower right sleeve, offering a subtle and unexpected touch of vintage "eye candy."
